Manual Controls for Operating a POTCAT

The catalytic heater pads require electric power to preheat the catalytic pad before the fuel gas can be introduced. After the heater pad has reached a sufficient temperature, the fuel supply can be opened, allowing fuel gas to enter the heater. With the presence of sufficient heat, fuel, oxygen and the catalyst, the redox reaction (combustion) will occur and produce heat. Once the heater reaches a stable condition the electrical supply can be disconnected, and the heater will continue to run as long as fuel is available.

STEP 1

Connect the electrical supply and preheat for 15 minutes.

STEP 2

Activate the safety valve to allow fuel to enter the heater. Allow the heater to run with electrical preheat active and fuel supply flowing for an additional 15 minutes. This gives time for the heater to stabilize.

Step 3

Disconnect the electrical power after 15 minutes as indicated.  The fuel gas will provide the power required.

Step 4

Heater will continue to run until the fuel supply is shut off.

To turn off the heater simply close the fuel supply and it will stop in a matter of minutes. The safety valve automatically resets and closes when the internal heater temperature falls. No further action is required until the next startup. For more detailed instructions, download the POTCAT Operations guide below.
